RAVEN Frontman Remembers Late METALLICA Bassist CLIFF BURTON
January 7, 2006RAVEN frontman John Gallagher was recently asked by a fan on the official RAVEN message board what METALLICA was like to tour with back in 1983 when they had Cliff Burton as their bassist (METALLICA supported RAVEN on the "Kill 'Em All For One" tour).
"Cliff was a one-off — a real hippy!!!" Gallagher responded. "I swear, he had this pair of bell bottoms, one leg had a BLACK SABBATH patch on and the other a RUSH patch!! A really funny guy and a great player — such a tragic loss. Funnily enough, I just found a bootleg of a show we did with YNGWIE [MALMSTEEN] in Chicago 1986 the day he died (we'd found out about his death fast as our regular tour manager was working with ANTHRAX and had called our manager) and I played a big chunk of '(Anesthesia' Pulling Teeth' [Burton's bass solo on METALLICA's 'Kill 'Em All' album] as a sort of tribute... I guess the audience thought I was just messing around, but I respected Cliff a lot... Anyway, we had a blast on that tour and got on well with the METALLICA guys!"
